The Odyssey (2026) - A Guest Review by Adrian Brain

After the 2023 megahit “Oppenheimer”, director Christopher Nolan is back with his latest epic. This is based on Homer’s ancient poem about King Odysseus’s prolonged return from the Trojan wars. And EPIC spelt large it is, but sometimes bigger isn’t necessarily better.

The film moves from set piece to set piece, some better executed than others, as Odysseus and his men encounter monsters and fickle gods, with his men being culled in numbers after each encounter. Meanwhile, back home his (very) long suffering wife and son have to deal with his absence and uncertain succession, all whilst under threat from sea raiders (and some curious neologisms).

Matt Damon as Odysseus leads the stellar cast, but I’m not sure was the right person for the job, whilst Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland do a bit better as his wife and son. Robert Pattinson, John Leguizamo, Logan Marshall Green, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal, Lupita Nyong’o and a memorable Samantha Morton all pop up in support, but this array of celebrity thesps actually becomes distracting after a while.

I quite enjoyed the film, and Nolan didn’t try to mold the story to fit a modern narrative: the story of good and bad leadership, the horror of war and the consequential loss of humanity is still as relevant today as ever. However, the film simply isn’t in the same league as Oppenheimer, Dunkirk, Interstellar or Inception, and as such can only be considered something of a disappointment.
